Truth and Reality
October 9th 2006 05:13
These days many people like to think there is no absolute quality about truth, that it is whatever one likes to believe, or whatever “your truth is”. Certainly there is no absolute value about “Whatever you believe” because it is entirely self-centred, just an imaginative dreaming with no basis in reality.
But what if we said the same thing about the laws of nature, that they are whatever I believe in, or whatever my truth is”. That would be laughable, because the law of gravity, for example, is clearly not subject to whatever I believe. It is a reality that we have to deal with, as is every law of physics. We can’t change them, ignore them or misunderstand them. Whatever we think, or believe, they are operative. All we can do is find out about them, which we do by observations and repetitive testing. Once we understand these physical laws, we can use that knowledge to design things like aeroplanes and nuclear energy sources.
So, as in the physical, so in the spiritual! There is definitely a supernatural world over us and we need to understand its laws. Like the natural laws they are actually a constant, and work whether we believe them or not. For example, “It is more blessed to give than to receive.” Those who give generously have great fun doing it (isn’t that a blessing?) and are the recipients of delighted feedback and great friendships, and often great business relationships too. And it is amazing how the tide of generousity falls back in their laps, as people also give generously to them. Thos who receive are certainly blessed, but the givers are even more so.
Honesty is blessed with secure (family and business) relationships. Faithfulness in marriage is blessed with secure children (split marriages certainly devastate the children, even if some of them are able to cope with it eventually). Humility and a learning attitude are blessed with wisdom and understanding (compared with pride which stops people from seeing truth or reality in many situations). These are some of the obvious spiritual laws.
Truth is absolute, just like the laws of physics. It’s up to us to discover truth and live by it. The One who created the universe has set down spiritual truth in the Bible. It is there for us to study and learn, and to benefit by our knowledge. “Seek and you shall find (discover)” says the scripture. Now, that’s a blessing!

The Matrix
New Ager: "Don't be a narrow-minded bigot. All open-minded people realize that there is no such thing as truth!"
Christian: "Really? Is that true?"
New Ager: "Yes, of course it's true - um...er..."
