Spiritual Kitchen

This is the most important room in the house. It’s where everything happens and all the people congregate. No matter how many other recreational rooms there are in the house, the people will be in the kitchen most of the time – especially at a party! Unless it’s a barbecue. Its design is of the utmost importance.
I’m designing the kitchen of my new house right now. What I like is lots of benchtop space facing the family room with such elements as sink and stove elsewhere. This means there is plenty of room to set plates – or even trays - of food and to collect dishes.
The other total essential is a great pantry. How can I buy things in bulk if there isn’t enough storage? I really love the old pantry rooms they had in the farm houses, reminiscent not only of great feasts, but also of regular fab food for the workers (who are probably more important on a day to day basis than the guests).
Of course, the beauty of modern houses is that the kitchen is open to family room so that cooking doesn’t mean separation from the other residents. Then of course there are the essentials like the frig, the ovens, the sink, power points (plenty please), heaps of cupboards and big opening drawers for ease of access.
After the essentials I can plan the décor. It seems superficial but it sets the mood and adds greatly to the enjoyment of the facilities.
In many ways the kitchen is the powerhouse of the family – the food builds their bodies, and the interaction builds their souls. Ha! Don’t forget this second function. So how to plan the kitchen of my spiritual house? OK
1. Benchtops: In my spiritual house the menu needs to be on display ready for family consumption. What menu will be supplied for spiritual food? Well, the family that prays together stays together. It’s very difficult to fight when you are praying for one another! This is the bread and butter which is never lacking in the house. The meat courses are provided by the Word of God. They can be accompanied by readings of modern authors (vegetables), but don’t run a vegetarian household if you want a team of athletes! There is huge scope for variety and nourishment in the biblical stories and modern authors, and for dessert hear a prophet or two. But don’t become addicted to prophecy and neglect the meat! Prepare a well balanced meal every day, plus a few nice snacks of proverbs for the interim.
2. The Pantry. Before you can present a good meal you have to do the shopping and then store the food. Think carefully about what will be presented each day. In fact the treasure house of God has plenty on offer and it’s good to go shopping there. The Holy Spirit Himself will attend your need and make suggestions if you ask it of Him. Then you can stock the pantry with exciting things that can be brought out at any time according to the situation. A well stocked pantry is equal to any sudden requirement. Good spiritual housekeeping will be well rewarded with great company and family health.
3. Packed away in the drawers are the tools, quickly and easily brought out for spiritual cooking – prayer, a Bible, various study aids, DVDs, Cds, sermons, music of praise, net access, mentors and teachers, beautiful dishes of kindness, cups of blessing, saucepans of preparation, a kitchen sink of care, a microwave of discernment, and oven of truth which is always served piping hot, higher cupboards for words of knowledge, and right there cooking on the stove is wise counsel. In the kettle you’ll find inspiration, and in the pop-up toaster chapter and verse. The herb cabinet contains salt of the earth, with stir-up curry and hot prophecy sauce. There’s medicine chest for healing prayer, holy laughter, and anointing oil. The sink is constantly emptied of the dirty dishes of sin which are kept cleaned up.
By invitation the exquisitely beautiful Spirit of the living God is working in the kitchen to provide for the household. He is only there when truly welcomed and loved, as He is much too gently sensitive to be there any other way. He is the Spirit of real Love and Truth. When He is home the food is truly Heavenly!
