A Non-conformist?

October 12th 2006 13:22
I came across a discussion of conformity and non-conformity today. It wa stated that there is so much stress to conform applied to children these days that they must be non-conformists in order to beat it.

I beg to differ. Every child in history will try to push the limits with their parents in order to discover what those limits are They will continue to do it until limits are placed upon them. If no limits are placed upon them they will keep pushing and pushing and grow angry because no-one is paying attention.

Many non-conformist characters in history were so because they had a short term goal they needed to achieve - Henry VIIIth,broke away from the Catholic Church in order to remarry. James Dean, Elvis Presley, and other examples can be discovered with ease. the final results were not great ecause non-conformity is not a well considered way of dealing with things.

I think many non-conformists are so because they have not had reasonable limits placed upon them at the right age, have not learned proper social boundaries and don't know when enough is enough!. It is a development of ignorance, not of pressure to conform. They are looking for personal interaction. The need to shock would seem to fall in with this line of thinking. Shock is a great attention getter - as are strong emotions like anger (petulance is used a lot in soapies ). Many mentoring programs are being put in place so that young people can get the attention they need in order to be able to make sound decisions and in the hope of defraying the useless non-
conformity.

This doesn' t mean people cannot develop individually within acceptable social boundaries. As acceptable people they can develop much better and with confidence. They can also lay down boundaries with others. They can recognise danger signals in relationships and stall them in early stages, rather than becoming involved in abuse situations needing long recovery programs.

Some say that intellect is better than emotions for guiding one's behavior, but intellect serves mainly the immediate gratification and can be a great manipulator. It needs values in order to direct its path, otherwise we''ll get more of the Adolph Hitlers, the Neros, the Al Capones, with great intellects but no acceptable value systems. They use their considerale intellects to manipulate systems to their own advantage, and murder is no problem for them.

In order to have a value system, you need to believe in something. Actually everybody does believe in something (has a religion) Some have wooden face masks or a million other gods, Some think the stars guide everything. Some put all their trust in the power of their intellect to manipulate and control. Others believe vigorously in nothing! A Non-conformist? (Yes, but they believe in it!)

I trust my Creator, who walked the earth as Jesus Christ, who knows and understands everything including the real me (I know this because He hears and answers my prayers) He gave us the manual (Bible) which talks of the desirability of wisdom who is far above the minds of men, but which you can ask for and receive.
