A Nose Ring?

September 14th 2006 14:22
If a rich man who loved his pet pig (pet pigs were in a while ago!) and wanted her as a house pet were to put a gold ring in her nose to signify his affection, would this make her suitable to live with? Probably not. Her large size and ingenuity for knocking things over would not be affected. She’d be bowling up to people and knocking them down with affection! She’d come in all muddy from the water feature in the back yard or from digging under the peach tree. The gold ring would never cover up for her lack of social graces.

“As a ring of gold in a swine’s snout, so is a lovely woman who lacks discretion.” says Proverbs11:22.

Discretion is a sensitive word. Not everyone understands it. Not everybody has it. Discreet means not wearing your heart on your sleeve and letting it all hang out for everyone to see, but giving consideration to what should be revealed and what should remain hidden. There is wisdom and judgement involved. Discretion is a process of being selective about what information is given and who might receive it. For instance, if a friend in distress tells you his story, and some of it shocks you a bit, you may chose not to repeat it to anyone else, because it’s his story and he alone has the right to tell it. On the other hand it could get you some mileage as conversation material. Its shock value could make you the centre of attention for a little while. Do you consider what to do with this information?

Discretion is a word that is very much involved in trust. When people are vulnerable they must talk to someone they can trust. If they think you will go tell everybody, then they cannot trust you. In their eyes you have no discretion and can’t be trusted.

This trust is an essential of marriage, or of any partnership – business, sporting, close friendship. Without discretion your range of partnerships will be severely hampered. Being Elle Ferguson the second wont improve the situation. All the exterior beauty in the world doesn’t make its owner trustworthy. The partner of someone without discretion is miserable indeed, and these days that relationship is threatened. Look deeper than exterior when selecting partners, business relationships and close friends

Take great care with your words. Discretion builds your reputation. Indiscretion destroys it.
