To Abort Abortion.

October 28th 2006 05:05
How much do people know about the possible aftermath of abortion?

If you agree that abortion is an appropriate option for an inconveniently pregnant woman, would you feel the same way if it were you – or your twin brother or sister – that was aborted? It could have been!

In America doctors and clinics are being sued because they have not fully informed the patients of possible clinical after-effects which can include quite serious psychotic conditions, breast cancer, difficulties with later pregnancies or with becoming pregnant. Then there are the two serious and quite separate issues of guilt and grief. Grief seems to happen as the patient tries to “just get on with life” without grieving the lost child, or with the complexities of grieving over something one agreed to, perhaps under duress of a displeased father or other social pressure..

One member of parliament made a great fool of herself by accusing certain pregnancy support groups of informing pregnant women of such potential difficulties. The current politically correct thing is “pro-choice” which actually means pro the abortion option and pro-choice proponents have not wanted the problems attached to abortion given publicity. However it turned out the breast cancer, psychosis, and fertility problems are most easily verified by looking up medical sites on the internet. They are recognised as post-abortion crises which can present themselves even years down the track.

It is good that the whole discussion has come out in public so the facts can become known. The whole matter will be laid bare at a meeting (free and open) at the Adelaide Town Hall on November 13th at 7.30pm.

A society that embraces abortion, euthanasia, cloning of humans or development of embryos for harvesting of stem cells has no respect for human life. How much further will it go? Soon there will be “dignified dying” programs for disabled, and many other categories of humans. Hitler will rule again! Already 25% of the euthanased people in Holland have not actually agreed to it.

It’s time the nation reviewed the whole abortion issue which costs us about 100,000 babies per year. Not least of considerations should be the stress of a woman under pressure to abort her child. This goes against the whole nature of womanhood, not to mention what violence it does to her body chemistry, and is not an issue easily swept aside. Meanwhile people who would love to adopt cannot get babies and have to look overseas for them.

We should not be hiding any of these facts from our young women.

I am an American woman. Your quote of 100,000, unless this is an Australian statistic, is very incorrect for America. There have been approximately 40 million abortions performed legally since Roe v. Wade was passed in the early '70's. That averages to over a million abortions per year.

As the former Executive Director of a crisis pregnancy center, pro-life based, and very successful, I will tell you that women do need to be more informed about the risks. I absolutely stand for informed choice. I have worked with women who were told it was nothing more significant than having a tooth pulled, that the emotions afterwards were due to hormone fluctuations, and the depression far reaching into their futures were in their heads and not as a result of their abortion experience.

I do not believe that all women suffer ill effects. I think that women are intelligent enough to figure out for themselves if abortion is something they should follow through with and I believe that women are owed sufficient information to make that decision correctly for themselves.

However, I left the center because I came to realize after a young woman came to see me, who was barely a teenager and had been raped and left pregnant after the assault, that I could no longer justify looking at women and definitively telling them that abortion would bring them harm. I respected the center and its mission enough to know I no longer believed in it's mission as completely as I should have.

I have massive problems with anyone stating that abortion needs to be illegalized. I say, until women's hearts have been changed, allow them to be safe until then. I also have massive problems with the abortion industry making billions of dollars a year from a woman's personal crisis. If they so believed in their fight, then they should offer abortions free of charge, as the prolife movement does.

Sorry to go on so long, I have tons more I could say but I won't monopolize your time that way. Interesting post.

Thank you "Voices" for your very caring answer. How devastating for the young woman. Somehow we need to relearn the art of protecting our young women from such activities of brutal men. She was barely a teenager and found herself in that situation.

Society is getting more savage by the hour so we really need to think much more about personal safety, especially of women. There are now very many places where they are at risk. Nightclubs have to be included in that list.

Personally I believe that it is wrong to abort an inconvenient baby. It breeds a fearful insensitivity to killing which is very dangerous. Even though I agree not all women suffer such after effects, no-one knows , in their own case, what will happen. In the case of the young, raped woman very much care is needed, but i still think adoption is the better option. We will have to agree to disagree on that.

I can't work out why the "pro-choice" lobby do not wish their clients to be in full possession of the facts, . Something very fishy there! Pro-choice seems to mean very distinctly pro-abortion, not pro life, so it's a bit of a misnomer.

Yes, the statistics I gave were Australian

About illegalising abortion, you will never change women's hearts by making the choice to kill a legal one. Yes, it is a choice to kill - there's no way around that, and making that choice will never improve anyone's sensitivities.
